Besides the bustling town of Swindon, there is an amazing amount of green open space to enjoy a walk through the countryside, along a canal or to see a beautiful view of Wiltshire.

Whether you’re aiming to improve your fitness or just looking for a different place to walk here’s our favourite list of outside spaces in Swindon which we believe are worth doing:

Coate Water Country Park has a 56-acre reservoir built which was created in the 1820s, and also a smaller lake which is also Wiltshire’s first Local Nature Reserve. The lakes have been declared a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) in order to protect the wildlife and wildflower meadows. This stunning Country Park is open 365 days of the year, 24 hours per day with Splash Park, Café and BBQ Hire available to name but a few things available to do.

Swindon Town Gardens is Beautiful English formal gardening at its best. Allow yourself to step back in time with this Victorian garden that is set in an old quarry which used to produce Portland stone. There are some beautiful colours in Spring with borders of bright polyanthus, tulips and pansies amongst the flowering cherries in these gardens. In summer enjoy the lovely rose garden and other areas full of vibrant colours. There is also a formal pond and sitting area close to aviary. Families can picnic and play in this lovely peaceful oasis.

Lydiard Park is a beautiful historic estate on the western edge of Swindon, with the Palladian House, Church and Walled Garden, set in 260 acres of parkland. The children’s play area, Cafe & Tea Rooms, events and education programmes make Lydiard Park a great destination for a family day out, a run or bike. If it takes your fancy there are also BBQs available to hire in the summer and lots of picnic spots.
